About Me

For the past few years, I have dedicated the majority of my time to horse racing. I have become an established member of numerous racing forums and I am sure a few of you will have seen my 'Please Ignore' threads on GG and Everythinghorseracing.co.uk (great forum). In my spare time I also advise a number of parties concerning bloodstock and dosage profiles. In the last 5 years I have formulated numerous selection filters and rating systems which have allowed me to achieve substantial profit on a yearly basis. I have also established links with a number of stables, and receive regular info which I will share on the blog as and when I receive it. For me horse racing is a passion and I'm always looking at ways to improve, both as a tipster and as an equine enthusiast. I hope you enjoy reading my blog and feel free to contact me either via email at myhorseracing101@gmail.com or via twitter at horses4course.

Today's Selections

Once again there will no tips from me on my section of www.horseracing101.co.uk today as nothing catches my eye and the racing on offer today is terrible! Hopefully tomorrows cards will be better because there is no point in placing bets just for the sake of it.

INFO

4:40 Catterick - Makellys Blackpool (12/1)  - 1pt e/w

I'm pretty sure I will regret this but I've received a phone call for this horse and have been told that if she goes on the ground she should be capable of running into a place. I can't say I'm entirely convinced but I will be having a small e/w play but I suggest people proceed with caution because there has been very little movement in the market for the horse. That being said, this guy usually is pretty reliable and I've known him for a long time. So we will see what happens.

2:40 Catterick

Amok (7/2)  - 3pt win - Despite being a fan of Trend Is My Friend I have to say that he has made a disappointing start to his hurdling career and his inability to settle has been his undoing on both of his last two runs. Returning today following a break of just 10 days, I don't believe his connections will have had time to iron out the creases and for me he is vulnerable especially at the current price. With that in mind, my selection is the Vaughan runner who has been well supported this morning and could be about to make a return to form under a more enterprising ride than we saw last time out. On his past form his current mark looks reasonable and with question-marks surrounding the majority of his opposition, I think he's a rock solid bet and even offers a bit of place value.

Today's Selection

The cancellation of the Plumpton card skewed my selections slightly as my two main bets today were pencilled in to run there as a result I will only be having one bet today but it should prove to be an absolute cracker!

2:05 Catterick - Tipsy Gypsy (11/4) - 3pt win - On the face of things this would appear to be a three horse race and personally, I can't see Imperial Vic being good enough to carry a double penalty even though he has the benefit of experience and should be able to get a soft lead. His trainer has openly stated that his future lies in handicaps and with his yard in poor form, and with two potentially smart, unexposed, rivals in opposition, I'm definitely ready to take him on at the current price. The McCain horse in my opinion is the obvious danger to my selection as he has some decent P2P form, is a natural born stayer and has already shown ability under rules. I do have two major gripes with him though, firstly, I'm 90% sure that the course at Catterick will be against him and secondly, I think the ground may be on the soft side for him. So having disregarded the two horses at the head of the market, the obvious choice was the newcomer Tipsy Gypsy who impressed plenty of PTP experts when winning at Dromahane back in November Following that run he was purchased by the Vaughan yard who had this to say about the horse;

"A son of the excellent young sire Milan and out of Montelimar mare, he is a full-brother to a dual hurdles winner. He has been bought as a long-term staying prospect and could be anything."

In my opinion there is no doubt that Tipsy Gypsy should have all the raw talent to win a race of this nature. Vaughan has definitely bided his time and he's a trainer which usually plans the routes for his top prospects very carefully. As per usual the market will tell the tale and so far this morning it has been very positive. Obviously this will be a tough test for the newcomer but Catterick isn't exactly taxing on the hurdling front and the key issue will therefore be whether he can stick with the front running Imperial Vic and stay the distance. If he brings his PTP form to the table, I think it's is very likely and at a best price of 3/1, I think he's the value bet in the field.

2:00 Exeter

Many Clouds (9/4) - 6pt win - Just the one bet today and I think this horse is overpriced in the context of today's opposition. Clearly the Nicholls horse has talent but I'm not sure he will be fully wound up and my selection definitely has a significant edge of the experience side of things. Furthermore, when you look at Many Clouds form, its rock solid and with the likes of Up and Go and Gevrey Chambertain  sure to feature prominently at the Festival, I believe that MC could kick off a great day for Sherwood, in fine style.

3:45 Lingfield

Woolfalll Sovereign (3:1) - 3pt win

Last bet of the day unless I get any info.

Today's Selections

I'm not sure how much spare time I'm going to have today so I have taken the decision to post my selections up now, without write ups, so that people at least have a chance to back them if they want to. If I do manage to find some time I will obviously get some write ups posted but just to reassure readers, I can confirm that the normal level of due diligence has gone into each and every bet.

1:15 Newbury - Lac Fontana (3.15 Betfair) - 3pt win

2:25 Newbury - Silviniaco Conti (4/6) - 6pt win

2:40 Wetherby - Fago (4/5) - 3pt win

Today's Selections

I move into today's selections with an underlying fear of siding with the wrong horse. Like yesterday, most of today's NH races feature a couple of horses from my to follow list/alerts and that always make me nervous. Despite that I'm still confident of finding a few winners and continuing my solid run of form.

1:40 Kempton - Comeonginger (6/1) - 1pt e/w - I heard great things about this horse following it's PTP wins and was therefore extremely disappointed when I backed the horse at 2/1 on his debut for Paul only to see him fade dramatically 2 from home. That run immediately sent out the warning signs that this horse still had a breathing problem (wore a tongue tie previously) and with that in mind this has to be considered a speculative punt as I'm relying on the fact that Paul would have given him an opp during the last 100+ days. If I'm correct and the breathing problem is sorted, then I expect this one to step up significantly and although the King horse will be very hard to beat, I think Comeonginger will be fighting it out at the finish and that nature of the course at Kempton should suit him.

2:35 Bangor - O'Faolains Boy (2/1) - 3pt win - Clearly this race is a difficult one to call and in my opinion a claim could be made for any of the 4-5 runners at the head of the market but for me, OB just has the edge. To date I have been very impressed with his performances and I know that Trevor Horgan thought that he was capable of being a really high class performer in both codes (hurdles and fences). Today's trip represents a new  challenge for the horse but he is bred to stay and more importantly, he's already proved his jumping ability by winning twice at Chepstow. It is this aspect of the horse's profile which really sets him apart from the rest of the field as does the fact that he will have the assistance of a 7lb claimer. If i was to pick out one negative, it would be the form of his trainer but she targets Bangor to good effect and I'm confident of a big run.

4:20 Bangor - Tonvadaso (11/10) - 3pt win - I tipped up this horse as a max bet before it made it's debut back in December and I have no doubt that she's more than capable of defying a penalty against today's opposition

4:50 Bangor - That's Rhythm (6/4) - 3pt win - I've had some success in recent months in the hunter chase scene and this is a horse which would appear to fit my selection criteria. Obviously his absence from the track is a concern, as is his recent PTP fall but he should still be a class above his competition today.

Today's selections

I'm having some Internet issues this morning which means that I'm having to post today's selections via my phone. Unfortunately that means there won't be any substantial write ups at this time but if I can fix the problem before racing starts then I will endeavour to get something up.

Today we are being treated to some very nice races and the cards at both Haydock and Doncaster offer plenty of decent betting propositions. My main problem is that nearly every race features horses from my alerts and therefore it's very difficult to cut my potential bets down to just 3 or 4. With that in mind, I have decided to stick to the selections which in my opinion offer the best value.

1:55 Doncaster - African Gold (11:8) - 3pt win bet - very difficult for me to oppose Close Touch who is right at the top of my horses to follow list but I don't think today's trip is right for him at this point and Henderson will be keen to ensure he doesn't peak too early as the Supreme is his obvious target. With that in mind African Gold is the obvious alternative and should take a world of beating as we know he will stay all day and is a horse on a serious upward curve.

3:15 Huntingdon - Deia Sunrise (28/1) - 1pt ew - I know this horse is a lot better than it showed on debut and he is very well thought of in the yard. I think he was too fresh to do himself justice that day but I expect to see a different horse today. Clearly it's a hot looking race and there are plenty with solid claims but I just feel that this horse has been neglected in the market and may surprise a few people.

4:15 Huntingdon - Tricky Trickster (4/5) - 3pt win - probably betting with my heart rather than my head here as it's great to see this old boy back on a track but I still think he should have the class to be very handy at this level and I expect him to go off considerably shorter than his current price

4:25 Meydan - Emotif (9/4) - 3pt win - De Kock is a trainer which I really admire as he's straightforward and tells it like it is. He's been waxing lyrical about this horse over the last few weeks despite the fact that she's suffered a few setbacks. Ideally he would have wanted a prep run prior to this race but I think the likes of Music Chart and Shuruq set a poor standard and I expect Emotif to win and win well.

Today's Selections

3:15 Ludlow - Glorious Twelfth (13/8) - 3pt win - This horse was on my to follow list this season and to date she has progressed nicely. She made her debut in a novices event a Newbury and went down by two lengths to Dancetilmidnight who subsequently went off as a hot favourite in a decent listed mares race. On GT's next outing she showed the benefit of that experience and despite jumping erratically at times, she won convincingly. As a result of those performances, she has been awarded an OR of 120 and personally I think she's more than capable of progressing past that mark given the quality of her pedigree. Henderson is a trainer who really knows how to get the best out of his mares and there is no doubt that the Kelvin Hughes breeding operation will be looking to win some high quality  races with Glorious Twelfth before sending her out as a broodmare.

As far as the opposition is concerned, Mickie clearly sets the standard but it would appear that Tinkler has deserted her and on some collateral form lines GT should have the beating of her. Highland Retreat is an interesting sort for the inform Harry Fry, especially as she's been running in mixed sex comapany, but I think today's trip will probably be on the shortside for her as she's looked like an out and out stayer in her previous races. The final horse of interest is All Annalena who has been well supported in the last few hours. On her recent form she may be up against it today but I'm always wary of horses with profiles like hers because if her connections have found the key to her during her 90 day break and Elsworth can settle her early on, then she is clearly very well handicapped. With that in mind I will also be placing a side bet. Side Bet = Glorious Twelfth & All Annalena - 0.50pt Reverse Forecast.

3:50 Ludlow - Grandioso (9/4) - 3pt win - Like GT this horse also featured on my to follow list and he has improved significant since being sent over fences. My personal feeling is that he has plenty of room for improvement in these types of races as the majority of his rivals are exposed and in poor form. Nicholls has shown over the years that he can always pull out a little bit more and this horse was purchased with chasing in mind. On collateral form lines he should  have the beating of both Cootehill, Valmari and Cadoudlas and therefore the only real danger I can see is Siberian Tiger who should really appreciate the drop back in trip. Evan Williams is a trainer who targets Ludlow to good effect but his form has been poor recently and I would have to see some significant market support before I could justify backing him and for that reason Grandioso looks like a worthy favourite and I strongly believe that his current price represents great value.

6:35 Kempton - Golden Causeway (Evens) - 3pt win - GC was a horse which showed plenty at home last season but was constantly in season and never really showed what she was capable of. I don't like backing filly's on the AW but she is bred to appreciate the surface, she's clearly a lot better than her current mark of 67, the yard is in good form and it looks like a pretty weak maiden. I was very close to max betting this one but given Botti's record when fitting a first time tongue tie, I have a sneaky feeling that we might see some significant improvement from the well bred Wakeup Little Suzy.

As well as the win bets above I will also be placing a 1pt win treble.

2:00 Doncaster

Up To Something (2/1) - 6pt win - For me this is probably the most intriguing race of the Doncaster card  and it's definitely a tricky one to assess. Up To Something comes into the race with an official mark of 130 and carries a 5lb penalty as a result of his win at Uttoxeter back in October. Since that date he has put in some solid performances, the best of which came last time out when going down by five lengths to Puffin Billy who is a real livewire contender for the Supreme/Neptune at the festival. Looking at his collateral form with the likes of Population (My Tent or Yours, Turn Over Sivola & Xaarcet) and La Reve (Meganisi), I believe he is more than capable of giving 5lb to both. Another point in Up To Something's favour is his racing style, Market Rasen is a tight tract and it suits runners who race prominently, Up To Something is no stranger to front running and his ability to stay, jump and lead could prove to be invaluable today. With numerous horse's unproven at today's trip Fehily should have the chance to really kick this horse on and set a strong pace and he could get a couple of his opposition off the bridle very early on.

As far as potential dangers are concerned, clearly La Reve has room for further improvement and is likely to improve significantly from the step up in trip but the trainers form has to be a major negative, as does the presence of Leighton Aspell, who has a terrible record at the course. Population should be held by Up To Something on all known form lines and I'm not really sure he want's this kind of trip yet. The only horse which I really saw troubling my selection was the Pipe runner, Barney Cool, who featured on my Horses to Follow list for this season. Following his withdrawal this now looks like a one horse race and because of that I've decided to place a max stake bet of 6pts. Just to cover my back I will also be placing the following side bet:

Side Bet - 0.50pt Reverse Forecast - La Reve and Up To Something (Total Stake = 1pt)

3:00 Doncaster

Darlan (5/6) - 3pt win (fell)

RIP Darlan, such a massive loss to racing and the festival.

Today's Selections

1:20 Doncaster - Terre Du Vent (10/1) - 1pt e/w = You don't have to be a rocket-scientist to see that the  Henderson horse has the potential to demolish this field but I can't back a horse from that yard, at 1/3, this close to the festival and with that in mind I decided to side with the George runner. Terre Du Vent has looked far from straightforward in the past but she has always been well supported and would have placed on debut in a Grade 1 race at kempton behind Grumeti, if she hadn't fallen late on. Her last race at Fakenham gave her connections the hint they needed after she went out like a light and they've subsequently attached a tongue tie. I think that aid could make all the difference and I'm hopeful she will at least run into a place. (UP)

1:50 Doncaster - Zuider Zee (3/1) - 3pt win - This horse has the profile of a type who could be very smart and he could even be a livewire Neptune contender if he runs well today. Despite the large field the opposition doesn't look to be that great and there are probably only 3 or 4 real contenders. Out of those 4 though, most have experienced hurdles and failed to win and although they obviously have room or experience I just think that ZZ may well prove to be Fergusons Neptune horse and if that is the case then he has to make a winning start today. (2nd)

2:20 Doncaster - Ruben Cotter (2/1) - 3pt win - A bit of a speculative bet but I'm sure RC will improve significantly from the step up in trip and a transition to chasing. His pedigree would suggest that he's bred for it and is clearly better than we have seen from him so far. On official ratings he would still have a bit to find with the likes of Vintage Star but Nicholls has a tried and tested record with these types and I think we will see a different calibre of horse today. Today's Selections

1:50 Lingfield - Finger onthe Pulse (4/5 place) - 3pt bet - Realistically the favourite will probably win this race but I just have a feeling that the drop back in trip and a return to a fast surface will really suit my selection as he's a horse which has been plagued with breathing problems. He's clearly in the twilight of his career and I'm not sure he is even close to being worthy of his official mark of 137 but this looks like the perfect opportunity for his connections to get a bit of confidence back and I expect a big ride from McCoy.

2:20 Lingfield - Shernando (5/2) - 3pt win -  I'm struggling to see why people would be prepared to back Ransom Note  given that his previous connections were of the opinion that 10f pushed his stamina. The Henderson runner was an above average flat performer, is bred to handle the surface and has already shown some smart form over hurdles. Personally I think the bookmakers have missed a trick and I would have thought we will see Shernando taking home the prize with the JonJo horse taking the silver medal.

2:50 Lingfield - Shadarpour (4/5) - 3pt place bet -  As the card develops the races appear to get harder from a punting perspective and this one is a very trappy little race. Clearly the favourite sets the standard but the Moore horses are in fine form and Shadarpour had some decent form on the flat when trained in France and he's related to some very smart individuals. It's the yards only runner of the day and I think he will step up on his last performance and go very close.

4:20 Lingfield - Guest of Honour (8/11) - 6pt win -  I really wanted to try and find something to oppose this horse but the fact of the matter is that he's not just the form pick but he's also streets ahead from a breeding perspective. Clearly the price is now on the short-side but I think that he should run out an easy winner and I've ranked him as max bet material.

4:40 Wolverhampton

Good Speech (11/2) - 3pt win

Today's Selection

Henry The Aviator (2/1) - 6pt win bet - For all intense and purposes this has to be one of the bets of the day. Obviously we are looking at an AW maiden and they have a habit of throwing up some suspect results but this horse is bred to be precocious and he's bred to love the surface.

HTA is a Henrythenavigator colt out of a Chief's Crown mare, he is a close relation to Star Crowned (RPR 111) and is a half brother to a few smart types including Grade 1 winner, Eddington. His dam was a reasonable performer in the US and has already achieved some incredible purchase prices with her progeny. His Sire, is relatively new to the breeding game but has already stamped his mark and was the leading first crop sire in North America. Although he didn't hit those heights in this country, last year, the general opinion amongst the bloodstock agents is that his progeny will progress well with age and therefore the debut appearance of HTA as a 3yo is not a cause for concern.

Mark Johnston has been in unusually poor form this January which has surprised the majority of punters. He's won this race 5 times in the last 10 years though and also obtained a silver medal on one occasion, so there is no doubt that this is a race which he has targeted in the past. Crone Stud Farms also has a very good record at Wolverhampton, are selective with their bookings of Joe Fanning and have forked out some serious cash to buy the horse.

Obviously there is a chance that he will get beaten by something with experience but from a dosage point of view, you will struggle to find a better bred horse (6-10-18-10-0 (44) - DI 1.32 CD 0.27) and I have every confidence that HTA will win today and go on to bigger and better things. (1st)

6:00 Wolves (info)

Muncar (10/3) - 3pt win - connections apparently very confident that this horse is still well handicapped and in good form. A big run is forecast!

Today's Selections

The difficulties with the weather recently have resulted in an abundance of weak AW cards and some bad results for punters. With that in mind I will only be place betting today and although the odds may be on the short side for a few readers, I think it's a much safer way to bet in the current conditions and those that aren't happy backing short priced horses should maybe look at placing a few multiples instead.

2:40 Kempton - Megastar (5/6) - 3pt place bet

3:05 Lingfield - Khawatim (4/9) - 3pt place bet

3:25 Kempton - City Press (10/11) - 3pt place

Amanee (12/1) - 1pt ew (2nd)

Today's Selection

Having looked through the AW cards today there is only one race which fits my criteria and that's the 4:35 at Kempton. Unfortunately it's a very difficult race to assess due to the pace angles and the abundance of hold up performers.

At the head of the market we have Pastoral Jet who has been in good form over CD recently and has Thomas Brown on-board claiming 7lb. The problem with this particular horse is that he's far from straight forward, needs a fast pace to aim at and doesn't always give 100%. With that in mind I believe he's easily opposed.

George Baker picks up the ride on Hip Hip Hooray who is a decent mare dropping into 0-60 company for a first time in a while. Although she is an out and out hold up horse, she doesn't necessarily need a fast pace to aim at and that could be an advantage given the distinct lack of front runners. She has been out of sorts recently though which is a concern but her yard does well at the track and I would have thought she will run well. The fact that Mongan presumably picked the Phelan runner obviously intrigues me though.

Menadati is a horse who is clearly well handicapped as he is a horse with talent who is incredibly difficult to win with given the fact that he has real trouble breaking from the stalls. If we see another tardy start from him today then it's unlikely that he will be able to make up the lost ground and with both jockey and trainer in poor form, the 4/1 currently on offer looks ridiculous.

Silly Billy in my opinion is the horse which makes the most appeal in today's line up. Unlike the majority of the field he likes to race prominently and has also been known to front run in the past. Although the majority of his form is over 7 furlong, I believe he should get an uncontested lead if Mongan gets him to the front early and if that is the case then he will have every opportunity to set some steady fractions before really winding up the pace in the last furlong. If the race unfolds as I expect I think we will see a sprint to the finish and with the course riding on the slow side I think it's going to be very difficult for the likes of HHH, PJ and Menadati to make up lost ground. There is no doubt that Mongan is a rider to follow on the AW at the moment and his ability to judge pace is extremely good. I think that will be invaluable in today's race and with a few close calls off his current mark I think Silly Billy is nailed on to get his head in front again today. At a current price of 6/1 there is plenty of e/w value and I think he's the most likely winner in a race which is certain to be run at a sedate pace.

Selection - Silly Billy (6/1) - 1pt e/w  (UP)

Kempton

7:30 - Shalambar (7/1) - 1pt e/w bet - I looked at this race earlier and within 5 minutes had dismissed most of the horses, but the one horse which really stood out was Shalambar. Although he is an average performer he has a solid record at the track over today's trip and also gets on very well with Crowley. He already has a win under his belt in a large field and has dropped back below his last winning mark, which makes the stead stream of cash for him very interesting. I'm not sure he's one to have too much confidence in, but providing he gets a clear passage, I'm pretty certain he will at least place.

3:30 Lingfield (INFO)

(INFO) - 3:30 Lingfield - Als Memory (3/1) - 3pt win bet - My source was very confident about this one and if my e/w bet had won earlier then this would have been a 6 pointer. (1st)

Today's Selections

1:10 Ayr  - One For Hocky (10/1) - 1pt e/w bet - This horse caught my eye when winning a bumper in fine style at Newcastle last year. He out galloped his rivals that day and looked to be a horse with a real future. For one reason or another, Nicky choose to keep his powder dry after that performance and the horse wasn't seen again until October when he took part in a maiden hurdle at Kelso on heavy ground. Although he was well beaten that day, it looked as if the yard were treating it as a schooling exercise and he was never really pushed for an effort.

Today we see OFH for just the third time and his trainer is in tremendous form. So far this season Nicky has been operating at a 19% strike rate with his hurdlers, he's 6 from 21 in novice company, 2 from 9 in January, 6 from 20 when booking Harding and has an overall strike rate of 13% with his hurdlers at Ayr in the last 5 seasons. The horses owners are also known for winning races at appealing prices and the nature of the course at Ayr will suit this galloping individual perfectly. Although I fear the McCain horse, his price looks very short and I would rather take an e/w position on One For Hocky and hope he can at least place. (UP)

Further bets will hopefully follow this afternoon so watch this space.

3:00 Lingfield - Storm Runner (10/3) - 3pt win bet - This is a difficult little race to assess and a lot will depend on whether the Balding Horse (Perfect Mission) attempts to make all under Thomas Brown. If I'm correct and the jockey employs those tactics, then I think it will turn into a two horse race between Storm Runner and Titan Triumph. The decision to side with SR was largely led by the fact that he's progressing as opposed to TT who definitely appears to be on a downward curve. Clearly backing a horse like SR is a danger as there is every chance that he could now be in the handicappers grip but he faces some weak and unproven rivals today and with the race set to pan out in his favour, I think he's capable of defying his current mark. Today's Selections

The last few days have been difficult, the racing has been as bad as the weather and it's been impossible to find the motivation required to sit down and really study the AW cards. Today I woke up and forced myself to do it though and I'm hoping it pays off.

1:50 Lingfield - Woolfall Sovereign (11/8) - 3pt win - I'm not going to be winning any prizes for originality with this pick but I think he's a really solid favourite in a race lacking any real strength and depth. He is unbeaten over 5f, holds the course record at Southwell/Wolverhampton, is a CD winner and is clearly progressive. He takes on some seasoned sprinters today in the form of Fratellino and Swiss Cross but the later should struggle to outrun WS over 5f and the former has WTD on-board which is enough to put me off. (1st - SP 2/1)

3:35 Lingfield - Dorothy's Dancing (13/8) - 3pt win - Once again and obvious selection but it's one that I think will win. To be honest I'm surprised that this horse is such a big price given what she faces today. Her nearest rival in the market is a 4yo from the Newcombe yard (Spellmaker) who was the subject of a gamble which went astray in one of the worst 3yo races I saw last season. The horse is clearly very average and he would have needed to come on significantly over the last few months if he is to trouble the experienced DD. (1st - Rule 4 - 11/10)

4:05 - Lady Mango (7/1) - 1pt e/w - It's clear to me that the favourite should be hard to beat here but I'm not taking a short price on a horse being ridden by a female claimer. With that in mind I went hunting for an e/w selection and although my first choice was actually Olynard, Lady Mango looks like a reasonable alternative. Although she hasn't won for her while there was some promise in her last run and with the pieces on she might just run a decent race. (UP)

Hollow Penny (7/2) - 3pt win

Today's Selections

2:20 Wincanton - Definity (8/13) - 6pt place bet - This is a horse that is currently on the drift and that concerns me given the length of his absence from the track. Obviously it's incredibly difficult to know what talent, if any, still remains but this horse was a progressive and highly thought of animal a few years ago and the fact that his powerful connections have kept the faith, can only be viewed as a positive. The conditions today shouldn't be a problem, the yard are still going well and on his past form, he's clearly well handicapped.

2:50 Wincanton - Upham Atom (25/1) - 1pt e/w - Not a race for high exposure but Upham Atom looks like a decent e/w bet to me. He's back to his last winning mark, loves the course and is Liam's only ride of the day. He handled soft ground in the early part of his career but in recent times has needed good ground and that would obviously be a concern. He jumps well though and gets into the race today carrying a nice weight. It was a very close call between this horse and Richard Sundance but the trainers words about the horse's well being etc put me off that one slightly.

3:20 Wincanton - Dragons Den (16/1) - 1pt e/w - Personally I feel that the favourite looks very well in under his penalty today and I would definitely be expecting him to win. I'm not overly keen to lump on any kind of penalty runner at the moment though as race conditions clearly take their toll and for that reason I sought and e/w alternative in the form of DD. A simple assessment of DD's his form would probably suggest that he will struggle today but he's been racing against some nice horses and has always performed with credit. As a result, the handicapper has been reluctant to give him any rest-bite  but he did drop him 2lb after his last race and I think that might just be enough for him to get competitive today. He gets into the race with a feather weight and although 2m is probably a minimum trip for him now I think he will run ok.

3:50 Wincanton - Theres No Panic (Evens) - 3pt place bet -  The fact is that I would be amazed if this horse didn't at least place. In all honesty I think he will win and if the ground was a bit better I think he would win easily. His last two runs haven't be amazing but they should have conditioned him nicely and I just feel he will have too much for the likes of Opening Batsmen.

3:30 Newbury

3:30 Newbury - Vieux Lion Rouge (5/4) - 3pt win bet (1st)

Penalty runners in bumpers are usually avoided but this horse couldn't have been more impressive on his debut for the yard. He has a tremendous pedigree and should have no problem coping with the drop back in trip. He's short enough in the betting but I think he has a rock solid chance

Cover Bet -  1pt Reverse Forecast No 3 & 5 (total stake 2pts)

1:50 Newbury

1:55 Newbury - Imperial Leader (7/4) - 3pt win

I really fancy this horse today and the reason for my confidence is largely down to the way in which the race is likely to unfold. Having looked through the runners I expect Maguire to get his mount to the front early and kick on. Proffeseur Emery is quite a head strong individual and I wouldn't be surprised if the first time hood lights him up resulting in a very fast early tempo. If that does prove to be the case, then this is going to turn into a real test and Imperial Leader should relish that prospect.

Despite the large field I believe there are only a few potential win candidates in the line up and I'm definitely not happy to take a short price on the King runner who has looked far from straight forward and is prone to crack under pressure, which could be a major issue on the uphill finish. Enrich is clearly a danger to my selection if he's in the same form as last time but that's far from certain to be the case and it looks like he's unlikely to fulfil his early promise. Given the fact that he's trained by Henderson, anything can happen though and I definitely wouldn't be surprised if this one went close. Finally we have the Balding horse Chilberta King and he may just prove to be the dark horse in the race. His form to date hasn't be amazing but he was a very nice horse on the flat and his jumping has improved with each run. He's been racing against better horses than his opposition today and if he's supported in the next few hours he may prove to be the value bet in the race. As things stand though, I'm more than happy to stick with Imperial Leader.

1:20 Newbury

1:20 Newbury - Fago (6/4) - 6pt win - I have been waiting for this horse to appear on British soil since I saw him race at Auteuil last year. He is very well built,  jumps well and relishes soft/heavy ground.

Looking back through Fago's form, it is evident that this horse is top draw and is probably entitled to be ranked amongst some of the best French imports this year. He was only beaten 8 lengths by the incredibly talented, and promising, Ulyssia Royale, who I think has the potential to be a top class horse. Fago has also been placed in a grade 3 company and has already amassed £134,000 in earning.

Although Fago has recently been racing over further than today's trip, he has plenty of form over 18f and his pedigree would suggest that he has the tactical speed required to compete over 17f. He's a long striding, galloping type and therefore the nature of the track at Newbury should really suit him. He's a horse who likes to get his own way and given that his jumping is faultless, I wouldn't be surprised if Ruby sets off in front, gets the horse into a rhythm and makes this a real test.

We all know how well Nicholls does with his French imports and although Fago is relatively new to the yard, he has bundles of chasing experience and considering that his opposition have only had two runs over fences between them, this really is a race which he should be able to dictate, dominate and win. The current price of 6/4 looks more that fair as I wasn't particularly impressed by Colour Squadrons jumping last time out and he would appear to be the only real danger. Paul is still in great form, Ruby's on-board and I expect a stella performance from this very promising horse. (1st)

Early Selection

1:40 Ffos Las - KILCOMMON PRIDE (11/2) - 3pt win & 1pt e/w -  I know from my discussions with a few people that this horse is being aimed at the Midlands National and if that is the case then his connections probably needs to get his mark up to a minimum of 120-125 to make the cut. Given the close proximity of that race and the horses average recovery time, I don't think they can afford to use tomorrows race as a pipe opener. Although he is coming back from 300 days off the track, he loves Ffos Las, is a confirmed stayer, thrives in heavy ground and on the basis of his last run, is still well handicapped. His trainer is in good form and with major question-marks over the majority of his opposition I think this horse is massively overpriced.

3:35 Lingfield - Itoldyou (20/1) - 1pt e/w - I've been talking this selection through with my brother and he thinks I'm absolutely mental to be backing this horse but I'm keeping the faith.  Looking back through this horses form and race replays have given me a few reasons to be optimistic and being a PTP winner I really think he will appreciate the step up in trip tomorrow. His opening handicap mark of 102 looks workable given the fact he has a nice chasing pedigree and he's in good hands with Thornton in the saddle as Andrew is a jockey who seems to save his best rides for the course at Lingfield and currently maintains at 26% win rate at the track when chasing. Obviously the horse's trainer isn't prolific but  that makes me want this horse to win even more as small yards like Linda's are integral to racing. Although he record with hurdlers is terrible she hasn't done too badly with her chasers and Itoldyou definitely seems to have been found an opportunity to win a race.

4:50 Wolves

Charm Cry (20/1) - 1pt e/w (PU)

3:40 Plumpton

Virginia Ash (7/2) - 3pt win - A quick look at this horses previous races will tell the informed punter that this one brings solid form to the table. Although he has been well beaten in his races to date, his prices against really good opposition give a reason to be confident. His trainer has applied the pieces, sent him to a track where he has a solid record, put him up against exposed opposition and employed Joe to do the steering. The end result, the horse has been the subject of considerable support and I for one, expect him to win or at least go very close. (1st)

Today's Bets

1:10 Plumpton - Valdez (4/7) - This horse looks to have been found a perfect opportunity here and his yard have won this race twice in the last 3 years (both favourites). On his form to date he is miles a head of anything else in the field and although the likes of Askar and The Tiger are potential improver's they didn't show anywhere near enough on their respective debuts to suggest they're capable of challenging a horse who is correctly rated at 125. We know Valdez handles the ground, we know he jumps well and we know he's fit. Although 2m is probably a minimum trip now, he should be able to make his experience count and the only real danger I can see is Islandmagee but he's running off the back of a 239 day break and is therefore entitled to need the run. (1st)

2:50 Wolverhampton - Cool Sky (4/5) - This is a straightforward penalty system qualifier. He is hunting down a 4 timer today and carries a 7lb penalty as a result of his win over CD four days ago. The form of that race looks solid as the ultra progressive Big Boss followed him home and this is a chance for connections to get one more win in before this horse is forced to step up in class. (2nd)

4:20 Wolverhampton - Ofcoursewecan (11/2) -  This horse has a cracking little pedigree and although he was a disappointing favourite on debut, I expect him to come on for that run and he should be difficult to beat from stall 3. In years gone by Johnston has been a man to follow in January as his strike rate with 3yo's has been ridiculous. So far 2013 has not been kind to him but he's won this race a few times in the past and I think Ofcoursewecan is good value at 11/2. (UP)

Cool Sky (4/6) - 3pt single

3:40 Sandown

Alfie Spinner (4/1) - 3pt win

Today's Selections

1:00 Chepstow - Arthurian Legend (3/1) - 6pt win - For me this is max bet material, I fancied the horse when I was looking through the card last night but I then received a call from a friend with a connection to the horse who told me in no uncertain terms that today was the day. (2nd)

2:25 Sandown - Poet (7/2) - 3pt win - I was taken aback when I watched this horse win on his hurdling debut and I think he could potentially be very very smart. His connections have wasted no time in entering him in the Supreme Novices and more interestingly the Champion Hurdle and he is actually come in for a bit of support at big prices. We know he will love the ground and as only one of two horses in the field who actually want a 2m trip, he should be very dangerous.

More will follow after the 1:00 race (I was running out of time to get that one off before the off).

Additional Selections
1:35 Chepstow - Swnymor (3/1) - 3pt win
2:45 Chepstow - Fred the shed (10/1) - 1pt e/w
3:20 Chepstow - Soll (12/1) - 1pt e/w

12:25 Chepstow

Ravens Brook (25/1) - 1pt ew

Balmont Flyer (3/1) - 3pt win (1st)

7:00 Wolves

Sinchiroka (15/2) - 3pt win and 1pt e/w (1st - SP 9/1)

1:20 Lingfield

Spit (12/1) - 1 pt e/w - I would be the first to admit that this is a terrible race but because of that I believe there may be a bit of value to be had. Spit has a profile which would suggest that he has been far from straight forward for one reason or another as he has only raced 6 times in 5 years. Usually this would not be the type of horse I would target but he was very well support on his seasonal debut having been backed into favouritism late on. Those who put their hard earned cash on the line must have been very disappointed though when he missed the start completely and spent the whole race miles off the pace finishing in his own time under a sympathetic ride. Today he makes the switch to chasing and that's what he's bred for (dam a half sister to Simply Great). His trainer is in cracking form, his jockey takes off a valuable 3lb. he has plenty of tactical speed (bumper winner) and if it's injuries which have kept him away from the track, then he should appreciate the ground. Clearly not a horse to get carried away with but he may just be capable of running a good race in what is a terrible event.

Elsewhere on the Lingers card, there has been interesting money for the Hobbs horse Ballygarvey in the 1:50 and as an unexposed type, there could be plenty more to come from him in this sphere. The other horse who has apparently been the subject of some race course whispers is the Keighley runner Midnight Thomas who runs in the Division 1 bumper. He is apparently expected to come on significantly from his first run and the step up in trip is also expected to suit. I'm not sure I would want to take on the Baker horse though, who is clearly very well fancied in this one.

Best of luck with all your bets today guys.
